TRAVEL | Penang Food Trail

Assalamualaikum and hello love! Today's post is going to be yummy one because I want to share my food experience with all of you! ^_^ I went to Penang last week and FOOD is the sole purpose. *hehehe* I went there with my husband, my first sister's family (Kak Long) and we had a blast eating! :D I actually uploaded a VLOG in my YouTube channel so you guys can check it out but in this blog post I want to share some of the photos and just maybe a little bit extra info on the places we had our glorious food. :)

Watch my VLOG on my YouTube channel : https://youtu.be/PCl75oh8QG0

1st stop :
Hameediyah Restaurant, Campbell Street

We had Briyani + dalca + ayam bawang and ayam kapitan. I'm not sure what's the other dish was because I didn't eat it. The briyani rice is full of spices and I can definitely taste it so it is a bit spicy for the rice but it is tasty! I ate the rice with ayam bawang and it was bomb diggity, I will surely have this again and again and again. I think a plate of briyani and a dish is around RM12 (if I'm not mistaken). This is is a must when you come to Penang okay? :) Oh ya the place is pretty nice, it's not hot and it's clean and the washroom is clean as well, yeah!

2nd stop :
Ais Tingkap, Lebuh Tamil

There are a few selection drinks at the shop but this is definitely the main reason why we are here. It is a rose syrup base, sugar syrup mixed with with biji selasih and getah anggur. To top it off, coconut flesh is added as well. Totally refreshing, it is one of the drinks that can cool you off on a hot summer days. Perfect! Surprisingly it is not too sweet, that's a good thing. It is priced at RM2 if you are having it there or RM2.50 if you want to take away.

Accommodation :
Armenian Heritage Street Hotel, Lebuh Acheh

For room tour, click to my video! It is a nice room with basic necessities and we paid RM350 for 2 nights. It is about 10 minutes of walking distance to the famous Nasi Kandar Beratur. It is actually a strategic place as you can walk around Penang town easily. For more info on the hotel please visit this website : http://www.armenianstheritagehotel.com

3rd stop :
Hameed 'Pata' Special Mee Sotong (Goreng/Rebus)
Jalil Special Ice Kacang, Fort Cornwallis Food Court (Padang Kota Lama)

We ordered coconut shake and to be honest it is not that good. I think the coconut water is too sour and it does not have the coconut pandan taste. Maybe they don't use the pandan coconut type but it just doesn't cut it for me. I think the vanilla ice cream is not good as well, hmmm I had better coconut shake than this one. There are coconut flesh inside the shake but sorry, not my fav.

Now this is what we called perfection. Presentation? Maybe not so much. This Mee Goreng Sotong is  a dish that I would never thought I would love this much because I personally will choose rice over any sorts of noodles. But oh man, how wrong was I. The mee goreng is sort of a wet mee and together it is served with sambal sotong kering. Squeeze that lime so you get the acidity on the plate, Mixed everything up and put a spoonful in your mouth. Ahhhhh taste the spiciness, the soft mee and the meaty sambal sotong kering. This is purely heaven! :) A plate of this Mee Goreng Sotong will cost RM5 if I'm not mistaken.

The Mee Rebus Sotong on the other hand is okay but the taste is not as the usual mee rebus I had in KL. I only ate about 2 spoonfuls so I can't really tell much about it. I prefer the Mee Goreng Sotong instead of this.

4th stop :
Nasi Kandar Beratur, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling

The mosque next to Nasi Kanda Beratur

Okay so this is my first experience going to this place. Since it is open at 10pm, my brother in law (Abg Izal), my husband  and I left the hotel at 9.40pm. We reached here around 9.50pm. There were people already waiting to queue up actually but there wasn't any queue yet. If you want to try the famous nasi kandar beratur, you need to wait for the previous food operator to clean up and pack their things because the nasi kandar beratur that WE WANT is going to start arranging their food around 10.05pm -10.20 pm. The line started to built up exactly at 10pm and we were the 3rd group in line. Not bad at all because by 10.30pm we are done 'tapau'ing! :D

They have a wide selection of dishes you can choose from, so if you are adventurous, go ahead and try different dishes. My husband and I only got 1 ayam ros and 1 ayam goreng with okras and they only cost us RM14.90. Like what??? That is so cheap for 2 nasi kandar! :D

Nasi Kanda Beratur means you need to queue up for your nasi kandar! :D

I had nasi kandar with ayam goreng and okras. I mixed all the gravy the have and there were this fried onion which is so goooood! The gravies were not too spicy so this is good for anyone who doesn't really eat spicy food. I can eat this every night I tell you... D

The next day we went out about 8.30 am for breakfast and we stopped by this 3D mural, yeah a tourist gotta do this right? *hahaha* actually this is the only mural I posed with, I couldn't be bothered, really.  *hahah*

5th stop :
Roti Bakar & Roti Kuah Daging, Jalan Transfer

I ordered roti telur with kuah kari daging. The daging is soft and the curry gravy has a nice balance of all the spices. It might look spicy but it is not. I guess mild curry works better in the morning because you don't want to shock your body with spicy food, right? *lol*

Roti Telur Goyang is just a simple toasted bread with butter in the middle and 1/2 cooked eggs on top of the bread. It's the same combination actually if you eat the toasted bread with the eggs but I guess for the dish 'main' ingredient is the bread. The bread is well toasted, crunchy and soft at the same time. A total comfort food.

We went to Batu Feringgi after breakfast, just to take a look around. Went to the beach and sat there for about 10-15 minutes. That was it. *hahah*  :D

Then we went to this sort of a shopping mall called Straits Quay and just hang out there for a little while.

Soooo... if you follow me on Instagram or my Facebook then you know that I actually announced that  we are expecting a baby! :)  I have been keeping it for 20 weeks already and I guess I can officially tell everyone now that we are pregnant! I know people have been guessing and asking me earlier, but since my pregnancy is still in the earlier stage, I don't want tell people yet. But I'm already half way, I am 21 weeks now to be exact. :) We are happy of course and so excited, please pray for us that the pregnancy will goes smoothly and hope that my baby is growing healthily and strong. Thank you so much for the kind wishes, we appreciate it so much. :) Ahhh I can't wait! ^_^

6th stop :
Briyani Claypot & Cheese Naan with Tandoori Chicken, Restoran Kapitan

At first I don't think I can finish this off, but hey hey hey I cleaned the entire bowl. *hahaha* The briyani rice is not actually cooked in a claypot because I don't see the burnt rice at the bottom. I guess they just use the claypot for a presentation purpose. But still, the briyani rice is lovely, together with the marinated chicken. The chicken is not too spicy and I ate with this white sauce. I don't know how to describe the taste of the white sauce because it's hella good with the rice and chicken. And don't forget to eat it with dhal gravy okay?

The cheese naan is a bit too sweet to my liking. But the roti naan is lovely and the crispy edges makes it worth it. The tandoori is okay, not too spicy and my husband seems to enjoyed it very much! :D

After the claypot briyani, we went to a mall (not sure of the name) and we kinda hangout for a while because we want to tapau nasi kandar later on at night. I'm not sure the name of the nasi kandar but it's not good, I don't like it so there is no picture of that. *hahaha*

Thank you Abg. Izal & Kak Long for taking us for this Penang Food adventure! Totally worth it and we will definitely com back to Penang for more food. *hehehe* Don't forget to watch my video for live actions! *hahahah*

Thanks for reading love! :)

Till then,

  1. Can I give you some suggestions the next time you stop by in Penang for some delicious fares.
    1. Tajuddin Hussain Nasi Kandar (Queen St, Little India)
    2. Kuey Teow goreng, Bukit Mertajam, near Kamdar
    3. Jelutong Sea food. Ask some locals for directions because they're rather elusive. I think the place called Tomyam Udang is pretty nice.
    4. And if I have to suggest one Indian restaurant I would say try Karaikudi. South Indian chettinad cuisine.
